Summer ‘08 Update

If you see this post it means two things: First, I can post updates from my iPod touch (and probably my iPhone too). Second, my upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress wasn’t a total failure.

I would like to say that I will now be regularly updating but I know I can’t reliably make that promise.

Spring ‘08 Update

One could reasonably say that I have pretty much abandoned Trafalmadore.com of late. Foolishly, I thought my spring semester would be less insane than fall. As it turns out, my class schedule keeps me going from 8am to 5pm pretty much every day (except for Thursday when I go from 6am to 5pm). I suppose I should just embrace the insanity and make the most of the laregly non-existent free time that I do have.

Speaking of that ever elusive free time, I have started to redo my old Father Figure remix (from five years ago). It’s mostly a from scratch rework (that is, it uses effectively none of the sequencing from the one I did previously); however, I did manage to work back in a bit of the BBE remix of Flaming June that I sampled the first time around.

Here’s a clip of where I am at currently…

UPDATE FOR JEFF

Since, Jeff is the only one who ever checks this thing, this is a special post just for him. While I realize this brings this blog dangerously close to the banality of sites like Facebook and Myspace, I at least have some new audio to share. (This is what happens when I should be sleeping.)

Seriously though, my semester is currently packed full and my feet feel like they hardly even hit the ground. On the off chance you are reading this and are not Jeff, I’ve probably neglected you this semester. I’m sorry and hope that I can make it up to you with a big bowl of cereal and a can of soda (that’s about all I have in my apartment). If you fall into this category, feel free to stop by my apartment, break in, and help yourself to some Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Coke Zero. In the alternate, if you actually want to see me, feel free to drop by the radio station at midnight on Saturday (technically Sunday morning), as I still do Caution: Falling Beats with the little free time I have left.

Return to NOLA

I’m heading back for another exciting year at Tulane here pretty soon. If you’re in New Orleans and want to hit me up, I’ll be generally available during the middle of August. Classes don’t start for a few weeks so I should have a bit of time to make the social rounds.

The Big Sleazy

For all (two?) of my loyal readers, I will be in New Orleans for the next week. You know how to get in touch with me if you want to hang out. Hopefully, I will have a chance to work on Trafalmadore while I take some down time in NOLA.

I’m sure I’ll have some new photos from NOLA as well.

New Design

So I’m working on a new design for the blog/website. Bear with me while I work out the CSS bugs.

Update: The CSS mess for the front page is largely sorted. The comments page are another story all together. Watch this space for a webpage that works.

Update 2: The sidebar is done as well but the rest of the site hasn’t been transitioned to the new look. Its coming…sometime.

For those hanging in there through the redesign bumpiness, here’s a little clip of some music I’m working on. (Its really an excuse for me to test out the WordPress audio plugin I recently installed.)

The Joys of Printing

I find myself wondering this morning why it takes me 15 minutes to log in and print a 6 page document in the law school computer lab (I can do this in the university’s main library in under 60 seconds). Upon entering my login and password it took 10 minutes to get to a usable desktop, and another 5 minutes to open and print a six page, text-only, document. Thankfully, logging out was a quick 3 minute process.

In that period of time, I could have installed a stripped down version of Windows Server 2003, set up OpenOffice, and connected to a shared printer in the law school. Additionally, I could have just printed wirelessly to one of the printers at work and spent the 15 minutes walking across campus (at least I would get some exercise that way).

Though I can’t confirm any of this, my suspicions as to why the law school computer lab is largely worthless are a follows:

  • All the proprietary Novell Netware crap that must be loaded upon each user login.
  • The Norton ’security’ suite that loads and loads and loads upon each user login.
  • The law school’s refusal to implement other well tested (read: faster) computing standards adopted by the university’s institutional TIS.
  • The money spent on all the nice new 20″ LCD displays was originally supposed to go to training the law school’s IT staff.
  • The law school’s IT staff hates all the law school students, and figures if we get fed up enough with the law school’s lame system, we will just go use another computer lab (allowing them to pocket my $10 of “free” printing each semester).

Times Fly (Fast)

So as my spring break draws to a close, I can safely say it ended up being nothing like I expected. After originally having no plans to stay in NOLA, I wound up staying here, and to my surprise it was a rather good break. I got some work done, hung out with some friends, and got some sleep. Sadly, I will be back to the grind of grad school tomorrow with what promises to be an insane semester. Here’s to another month and a half of insanity.

Hospital Life

Living in a building connected to a hospital has its benefits. Things like close proximity to an ER (for when I cut off one of those pesky digits), or a high level of security (to keep out my various stalkers) are nice. There are, however, a few perks that many of you might not be aware of:

1. Blood spattered floors/walls - walking around a biomedical waste obstacle course to get to your car is a blast.
2. The moving of dead people - I now know the color of the sheet used to cover the bodies as they are put into the hearse (its a pretty royal blue).
3. Hospital food - the smell of hospital grub reduces the chance of additional meals for the day by 60% (this is good for appetite control).

Oh well, at least the view from my window isn’t bad.

So I Never Really Update This Thing…

Like the title says, I never really update the trafalmablog these days. Not that I really did a ton of posting previously, but for a while there you could count on something every 40 days or so. Largely, it was the sub-optimal way, in which I was actually updating the blog that kept me from making many changes.

Today, I make the jump to ecto on my new MacBook, which hopefully will lead to more frequent updates. That said, I’m not making any promises.

So I take some photos with the iSight on my MacBook from time to time.
Occasionally I post them here.
I do a little electronic radio show on WTUL. I don't update the page anymore, but you can browse the archives here.
At one point in time I hosted some old music projects here. The site is not up at the moment.
Here's my old about page. I will have a proper one up at some point.
